3-D Theater originally launched as Canonical Classics Co. in the summer of 2024. We needed to start promoting our debut production of Hamlet, so we needed a company name to put on the posters. I wanted to choose a name that would somehow convey our goal of performing true art, and my excellent father coined Canonical Classics Co. Alliteration is memorable, it got the point across, and I rather liked it. Although the company ultimately did not keep this name, it was a truly wonderful start to what would grow to a registered company in just three short years.
As we were approaching the promotion time for our 2025 production of The Comedy of Errors, we decided to change the company's name to something a little bit more attention-grabbing. I also wanted to expand on the values and mission of the theater troupe to really embrace performing true art through beautiful means that uphold the good of the actors, crew, and audience. This time, my mother came through with the name 3-D Theater. At a glance, it still fits our original intent: performing shows with depth and meaning. But it also encompasses the additional values upon which we want to build our company.
Canonical Classics Co. or 3-D Theater had a pretty rough beginning. The first year, a major storm knocked down the power lines to our venue. We had tech, dress, and even our first day of performances in the unlit, un-air-conditioned building. The following year, we lost our venue about three weeks before our performance. Other challenges (such as the lack of insurance and working on a free-will donation budget) limited our options for venue rentals.
Today, 3-D Theater is a small, concentrated, classic-loving, donor-supported theater troupe! The company's 3rd play is set to be performed in June of 2026. 3-D Theater is still going strong, fulfilling its mission to bring free, classical theater that reflects truth, goodness, and beauty to everyone in the Metro area!
